E-MAILS

To thank you for: Para darte las gracias por; no olvidar la preposición “for”. To give thanks” suena pretencioso.

Three-day brainstorming session: Nouns as adjective; describe otro sustantivo y no se pluraliza.

To get to know each other: Conocer a alguien es “To know someone” pero en el transcurso de conocernos usamos el verbo “to get” (to get together); conocerse, relacionarse, etc.

The lower cost, energy-saving twin-engine.

Dear Geoff,

I’m writing to thank you and your team for a wonderful three-day brainstorming session, it really is great for the Spanish and British R & D teams to be able to get together and get to know each other in a more relaxed atmosphere.

I’m sure you would agree with me that all sessions were very productive, but over here we are particularly excited about the potential the idea for the lower cost, energy-saving twin-engine model has.

We are already looking into lighter materials and hope to have a prototype ready by early June.

I trust you will keep me up to date on the progress you make.

All the best,

Despite you offer being or despite the fact that you offer is…

Sería incorrecto decir “direct or indirectly”.

Assuming (that)/As long as/provided (that)/providing (that): Siempre que…

Sometime in/sometime over: La forma más natural de decir “en algún momento durante…”

Renting our offices.

Dear Sr.

Having read through your letter of 15th January in which you express an interest in renting the office building next to our headquarters. I don’t foresee any problem with reaching an agreement on price despite your offer being below what we are prepared to accept.

I would like to take this opportunity to outline a few conditions for any company wishing to rent our offices.

Firstly, we don’t accept companies with more than 68 employees for insurance reasons.

Secondly, we cannot allow any company directly or indirectly involved in the telecommunications industry for obvious reasons.

Assuming you are able to meet these conditions, I will be delighted to meet you in person to discuss the finer details sometime in the next couple of weeks.

Yours sincerely,

Estimado Sr.

Suyo sinceramente

To come about: Surgir

To pass away: Fallecer

Over in the States: “Over” conlleva la idea de que hay un océano entre nosotros y Estados Unidos.

To say one’s good bye: Una despedida formal y a la vez personal. También podemos decir “to say good bye”

From now on/here-on-in/now-on-in/henceforth: De ahora en adelante

To place on order: No usamos el verbo “to pass”

Further: Adv; más lejos. Adj; adicional.

Your Paxton account manager.

Dear Malcolm,

I’m writing to notify you of a change which has come about in the position of your Paxton account manager. The New York account manager passed away last week which, apart from being a surprise to everyone, left a void in operations over in the States. Geoff Sinclair, your account manager, was asked to fly over immediately to take charge of things there. It was such short notice that he didn’t even have time to say his goodbyes and hand over his accounts in person.

Allow me introduce myself. My name is Paul Stone and I shall be your contact at Paxton from now on. I’ve been working in the sales department here for over six years and very much hope to meet up with you in person.

Meanwhile, if you have any problems or need to place further order, please don’t hesitate to call me on 612 374 374.

I’m sure Geoff will write as soon as he settles down in New York.

Best regards,

Also: Esperamos que no hayas empezado tu frase con “also”.

On your mobile: En inglés intentamos localizar a alguien “at their office”, pero “on their phone”

I had it switched off: Sorry you couldn’t reach me; I had my mobile switched off (siento que no pudieras contactar conmigo; tenía mi móvil apagado)

On account of the fact that: Due to the fact that

Supply you with: Nuestro verbo para “proporcionar” requiere la preposición “with” después del complemento.

As soon as: Al igual que después de “when”, expresamos un contexto futuro en presente simple

Let me know either way: Una frase hecha que conviene aprender; “comunícame cualquiera que sea tu decision”

The company loan.

Dear Helen,

I’m writing about the company loan we discussed last week. I dropped by to speak to you yesterday, but your colleague told me you were out at a meeting. I also tried to ring you on your mobile around six in the evening but you obviously had it switched off.

I would ask you to increase the loan from £80,000 to £95,000 due to the fact that we’ve decided to manufacture 50,000 units of the new product instead of 38,000. This decision was made in Monday’s board meeting, on account of the fact that we received a firm order from our Japanese customers.

Naturally I’ll supply you with all the documentary evidence as soon as you are able to meet up. Meanwhile, I would ask you to confirm that we can borrow this new account and that we can access the money by Tuesday 15.

Please let me know either way.

Best regards,

Estimada Helen,

Within: Para no repetir “In”

A first in: Para decir matrícula de honor; class honours degree

Should it be: Una forma muy educada para decir “if it is”

At your nearest convenience: “Cuando le sea conveniente”; ya que la expresión “whenever it’s convenient for you” comunica la idea, pero emplear aquí la palabra “when” resulta demasiado directo.

Openings in the marketing department.

Dear Madam,

I’m writing to enquire as to whether there are any current openings in the marketing department within your company.

I’m a 23 year-old male graduate with a first in Business Studies from Manchester University with a passion for marketing and thinking out of the box –I was awarded second prize in a national young advertisers’ competition last year. What’s more, throughout my time at University I made the most of the summer months working as an intern for Black Rat, a local advertising company.

I’m particularly interested in working for your company as you are always at the leading edge of all that is new and daring in the world of advertising.

I hereby enclose my C.V. Should it be of interest to you. I would be delighted to attend an interview at your nearest convenience.

Yours sincerely

Estimada Sra.,

To acknowledge receipt of: Significa “acusar recibo de…”

To manage to convey something: Conseguir transmitir algo.

Publishing venture: Iniciativa publicitaria

A competitive edge; Una ventaja competitiva

We can arrange a time; Podemos quedar a una hora. “An hour” significa un periodo de 60’.

My feedback.

Dear Susan,

I just want to acknowledge receipt of the mockup cover for our new series of books. Actually, I did try to phone you yesterday afternoon in order to give you my feedback. I really am impressed with the artwork and feel that you and your team have managed to convey the spirit behind this new publishing venture.

However I do feel that we need to get together one more in order to discuss the design of the book-spines. I feel this aspect needs to be modified so that our books stand out more on store bookshelves. The area of self-help books is dangerously saturated and I feel we need something extra so as to give us a competitive edge over our closest rivals.

I’m going to be free all next week, so if you don’t mind giving me a ring. We can arrange a time to meet up.

Best regards.

Following up on: Una forma bastante corriente de decir “en referencia a”.

Manager: Director, jefe o responsable.

It would be wise; una forma de traducir “deberías”, o más bien “sería sensato”.

As far as I’m concerned: Por lo que a mí respecta. Concerned; participio como adjetivo

You and your people: Una forma más explícita para decir “vosotros”.

No one has ever been able to: Nadie ha sabido nunca. En este caso no suena muy bien; to know how to.

To get to know you: Conocer; trasmite la idea de llegar a conocerte bien.

Impose on us:  Imponernos; imponer sobre nosotros, si empleamos “Impose us” imponemos lo nuestro.

The new marketing manager for the Italian subsidiary is coming to Spain.

Dear Pablo,

Following up on the subject from the lunch the other day, I want to remind you that Adam Bailey, the new marketing manager for the Italian subsidiary, is coming to Spain to spend a week seeing how we approach marketing here. They say that in two years he’ll be the European manager for sales, so I think it would be wise for you to meet him while he’s here.

As far as I’m concerned, you and your people are the best. I’ve been working with advertising agencies for years, and no one has ever been able to understand our objectives and meet our needs like you have. The results speak for themselves.

I want the European Office to get to know you. They want to impose on us the agency they use in US, and in the rest of Europe, but I know that you and your people can do it better, even outside of Spain.

Best regards.

As you may remember (As you will remember); es más corriente decir literalmente (como puede que recuerdes)

Not long ago: Curiosamente es más corriente decir “no hace mucho” que “hace poco” (A short time ago)

By the name of…: “de nombre…”

In charge of…(responsable de…) <enchárchaf>

Relating to; “having to do with”, “related to”, “concerning o regarding to”

If posible; suprimimos el verbo “is”.

Twice as Smart: Dos veces más listo. Se podría decir “two times smarter” pero es más corriente usar “twice as + adjective”.

Help me out: La preposición “out” realmente sobra pero al añadirla, el verbo adquiere más familiaridad.

Rafael Carro’s son.

Dear Conrad,

As you may remember, not long ago we hired a new financial manager by the name of Rafael Carro. Rafael is in charge of everything relating to finance and control, including cash management, which has always caused us so many headaches.

To make a long story short he has a 23-year-old son that wants to spend a couple of months this summer in the U.S. and would like, if possible, to spend them with an American family. Since we have already received here several children from your employees, I would like to know if you could help me place the young man with a family from the American organization.

The boy’s name is Rafael Jr. and he promises to be twice as smart as his father, I can assure you. Beside, he’s a very polite and friendly person. He’ll become close friends with the family right away.

Let me know if you can help me out on this.

To whom it may concern: Nuestra manera de iniciar una carta cuando no sabemos a quién dirigirnos. Conviene memorizarla.

It has been (Pres. perf): Lleva (periodo de tiempo “abierto” que todavía no ha acabado).

To attest to this fact: Por supuesto aceptamos “which proves it”.

But: Sinónimo “only”. Otros ejemplos; I could see nothing but fog (no puedo ver nada síno niebla), I haven’t eaten anything but a piece of toast (no he comido nada solo una tostada), Nobody but you can help me (nadie sino tú puede ayudarme).

Instruct: To give somebody instructions.

The construction work currently under way at the end of Riverside Way

To whom it may concern,

I write with regard to the construction work currently underway at the end of Riverside Way.

As General Manager of E. W E Wright & Son, whose offices are immediately next to the building site, it has come to my attention that over this past weekend of 15th/16th March, your construction workers invaded our premises and proceeded to dig up a strip of approximately 60m squared of land.

The land in question borders our car park and forms part of plot belonging to E.W Wright & Son. It has been in our possession for over thirty years and, it goes without saying, we have the deeds to attest to this fact.

I would ask you to remove your machinery from the land within 24 hours and return the strip. If this is not carried out to my satisfaction, I will have no other option but to take the matter further and instruct my lawyers to stop the construction work.

I trust you are willing to resolve this oversight in an amicable way.

Yours sincerely,

A quien pueda interesar,

The business world

Go-ahead: Autorizar.

Not altogether happy: Algo preocupado. “Altogether” significa “completamente”. No suena tan alarmista como “I’m somewhat worried about”.

For a period: “During” se utiliza con sustantivos (reuniones, películas, descansos).

Up to: Para referirnos a números, significa “hasta”.

As: También sinónimo de “because”.

To hold back on: Cuando retrasamos algo por voluntad propia.

Dear James,

I’m writing to confirm our acceptance of your estimate for producing our new catalogue and to give the go-ahead to start printing right away.

There is one issue which I am still no altogether happy with, however. I’m referring to storage of 20,000 units for a period of up to three months as we had initially agreed back in September.

I notice that you state that it will now only be possible to store 10,000 units for reasons unspecified. As storage is key for us I would ask you to hold back on printing the final 10,000 units until further notice.

I would also like you to confirm that the catalogue cover will be plastified.

I would like very much appreciate you clarifying the above-mentioned points as soon as possible.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Best regards,

Estimado James,

An unbeatable offer

By way of: We use this expression when we mean “to serve us” (ofrecemos un agradecimiento, una disculpa, una explicación); “by way of a big thank you”, “by way of an apology”, “by way of an explanation”.

As president: He’s talking about their function or role. He’s not making a comparison “like”.

It gives me great pleasure: A more idiomatic expression than the literal translation of “it is a great pleasure for me”.

For the past 25 years: Don’t forget that we never use the word “during” when we are referring to a period of time. It is only used with nouns; “during the meeting”, “during the break”, “during the crisis”.

Ranging from: “Since” is not acceptable here. We would allow; “from” on its own however.

No event: Literally “ningún evento” which, in English, sounds more natural than “there isn't an event”.

Go to great lengths: This expression is usually written, whereas we tend to say “everything possible” when speaking.

Even: We hope you remember that “even” can mean “hasta” when it is placed alongside a noun (junto a un sustantivo).

The most demanding of: We insert “of” when we use the superlative but don’t actually specify the context. Compare this to; “the most demanding people in this company” or “the most demanding people I’ve ever seen”.

Further information: This is the common formula here. It is more frequently used than “if you would like more information”.

Your offer to sponsor the rudder on your yacht for the Volvo Ocean Race

Hereby + verb + to + formally + verb (por la presente….formalmente); must go just before the verb.

The rudder on (el timón); the rudder is an external part of the boat and therefore the preposition must be “on”. “In” would only be used for a part of the boat inside the cabin.

Yacht; when we talk about competitive open sea racing, we usually use this word pronounced “yot”, instead of “sailing boat”.

Such a(n) + adjective + noun: In the case “tan + adjective” without a noun, the word is “so”.

Dynamism, courage etc; abstract nouns don’t take the article in English. “The unknown” is “what you don’t know” and is not an abstract noun.

Spanish; don’t forget the capital letter here! Obligatory with all nationalities.

Pre-race promotional campaign; we often talk about “pre-race activities” or “pre-match activities”. The word “regatta” is used in English but “race” is more common.

In both….and… (tanto en….como…); it’s more normal to place “both” immediately before the word it refers to.

As sponsor (Como patrocinadores); here “as” is imperative. “Like” would be incorrect as we are not making a comparison. You’re the sponsor.

The longer….the better (cuanto más tiempo….mejor); The + adverb/adjective….the adverb/adjective.

Dear Felicity,

Following our series of conversations and meeting, I would hereby like to formally accept your offer to sponsor the rudder on your yacht for the Volvo Ocean Race at the price we fixed last week.

It is a great privilege for my company to be associated with such an exciting sporting event which so closely mirrors the key attributes of our aftershave brand: - dynamism, courage, independence, the sea and the unknown.

What I would ask you to confirm is the exact number of Spanish cities the yacht will be in during the pre-race promotional campaign. You had mentioned the possibility of it being two weeks instead of one in both Barcelona and Madrid.

Obviously, as sponsors of the rudder, the tour before the race represents the only real opportunity for our brand to be seen and therefore, for us, the longer the boat is in these two cities, the better.

I very much look forward to hearing from you.

Your sincerely

Estimada Felicity.

Atentamente,

Getting the project underway

Concerning; nuestra forma de decir “en relación con”: Igual de validos son “regarding”, “with regard to”, “re”. “In relation with”, sin embargo suena raro.

Get underway; “to get something underway” es nuestra forma de decir “poner algo en marcha”. To be underway; estar en proceso o haber empezado.

If I remember rightly; nuestra forma de decir “si no recuerdo mal”.

Voice a preference; “to voice” puede ser un verbo y significa “expresar”. Se usa con;

“a preference” and “an opinión”.

The small amount of: “El poco…” Siempre hablamos de; “the small amount of space; the small amount of money; the small amount of interest; etc.”.

Making…dark; cuando una cosa hace que otra se convierta en algo descrito por un adjetivo empleamos el verbo “to make + something + adjective”, eg. It made him rich; le hizo rico.

It made her fat; le hizo gorda, it made him angry; le dio hambre. etc.

Dear Stephen,

I’m writing to you concerning the meeting we held over a month ago in your offices. I’m sorry to bother you again, but as we had discussed the possibility of getting the project underway by the end of June, I would like to know what the situation is in order to organize my team of gardeners.

We had initially discussed creating two raised areas at the front of the complex. If this is still on the cards, I need to know as it normally takes two weeks to order the earth.

It would also be a good idea to arrange a meeting to decide what type of trees you want at the back of the building. Although if I remember rightly, despite the fact that Patrick voiced a preference for plane trees, I would strongly recommend a shorter variety of tree. If we consider the small amount of space available, tall trees would cut out a lot of light making the rear offices very dark.

Let me know what you would like to do and I will ensure that everything runs smoothly and that the job is completed within two weeks.

Your sincerely,

Estimado Stephen,

We will not be able to make it

In the hope that; no empleamos la misma preposición en inglés “con la esperanza de que”

Tomorrow morning’s meeting; Es habitual emplear el genitivo sajón con expresiones de tiempo,  eg. last week’s edition; yesterday’s news, etc.

Desperately; a menudo junto con el verbo “to try”. Significa “de forma incesante”

Summoned; “to summon a person” <sáaman>  convocar a una persona. To hold a meeting; convocar una reunión.

To brief; “to brief someone of something” puede significar mantener a alguien informado de algo o dar instrucciones a alguien.

Suena fatal “with such little time”.

Dear Sheila,

I’m writing this last-minute e-mail in the hope that you might receive it before tomorrow morning’s meeting. I have been desperately trying to get hold of you to let you know that we will not be able to make it, owing to the fact that Geoff our marketing manager, has been summoned to Headquarters in Europe to brief the chairman on best practice in trade marketing within the Spanish division.

I have left a massage on both your voice mail and your secretary’s and I also spoke to someone in reception.

I’m sorry it’s such short notice and I hope we can reschedule the meeting for sometime early next week.

Best regards,

Estimada Sheila,
